700,000 Safe Work Hours Achieved by CFCC

"I really enjoy going around the nation telling people about the great safety record of team members like you within our company. Thank you for making that possible." That's how Cianbro's VP of HR, Safety & Health, Alan Burton, summed up the latest safety accomplishment of Cianbro Fabrication and Coating Corporation.  Burton, Cianbro Corporation President Andi Vigue, CFCC General Manager Jack Klimp, HR Director Mike Bennett, and Health and Environmental Hazards Manager Scott Knowlen were among the company leaders who attended a luncheon in honor of the CFCC teams in Pittsfield, Maine and Baltimore, Maryland. Pittsfield and Baltimore team members are celebrating 700,000 consecutive work hours without a lost time accident.

Klimp rose to speak in front of the Pittsfield team, pointing out common sense analogies to illustrate the enormity of 700,000 safe work hours. "If you laid 700,000 dollar bills end to end, the line would stretch 90 miles," said Klimp.  "If 12 team members worked 30 year careers without ever getting injured and then retired, that would equal about 700,000 safe hours. Or you can think of the number in terms of baseball: If every member of the Red Sox, Yankees and Orioles play the next 2620 games in a row, all breaking Cal Ripken's Major League record for consecutive games played, the number still adds up to less than 700,000."

President Andi Vigue pointed out that it wasn't so many years ago that 25,000 work hours without a lost time injury was cause for celebration. "We'd see commemorative jackets and hats flying around all over the place!" said Vigue. "Now, thanks to the standards you folks are setting, I foresee a time when we'll get to 700,000 hours without even a Near Miss."

Klimp summed up the accomplishment this way: "I'd just like to express thanks to the team here in Pittsfield and in Baltimore for their quality plans every day, their team work every day, and their commitment to going home every day in the same healthy condition in which they showed up for work."

A luncheon to honor the Baltimore team is scheduled for June 24th.
