138 kV Above-Ground Expansion

Scope of Work

Cianbro performed the above-grade expansion of the 138 kV substation including the removal of existing equipment and installing new switches, bus CCVT, transformer, and arrestors. Cianbro upgraded the 69 kV section of the substation including a new CCVT. For the 34 kV portion of the project, Cianbro removed switches, bus, station service transformers, and cabinets, and installed new switches, bus, station service transformer, cabinets, and control building.

  • Performed yard demolition
  • Demolished two 34.5 kV structures, ground transformer, and LA/PT
  • Terminated and tagged all cables
  • Erected eight steel structures
  • Installed 360 linear feet of rigid bus
  • Excavated and installed 11,100 linear feet of trench, backfill, conduit, and wire
  • Set and powered the control house
  • Installed power transformer
  • Installed 11 yard switches
  • Installed 17 yard equipment boxes
  • Installed new cables for 138 kV bank CCVT and 69 kV bank CCVT
  • Installed new AC, DC, and control cables
  • Installed 138 kV, 4-inch bus duct, MOAB, CCVT, and circuit switch
  • Installed 69 kV CCVT and FO junction box
  • Pulled fiber between the old and new control house and added components
  • Removed three 34 kV arrestors, disconnects, insulators, ground transformer, and switch
  • Installed above-grade grounding for the main transformer, CCBT, MOAB, and gate controller
  • Tapped SW-LAs-CCVT
Lean, Innovative and Unique Project Solutions

The project team completed all work for the substation expansion while working within an energized facility, including trenching and excavations for below-grade installations. Additionally, the project team coordinated partial outages required to create clearance for above-grade work to minimize power interruption.
