Nearly four years after Cianbro completed a landmark project in Connecticut, the company is still winning awards for the achievement. At the 27th Annual National Excellence in Construction Awards ceremonies sponsored by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) on March 2nd, Cianbro took home a “Best in Class” National Eagle Award for the Mystic River Bascule Bridge Rehabilitation project. The company won in the Infrastructure – Heavy Civil category. Only one national winner is chosen per category.
Cianbro ran the project between 2011 and 2013 in the heart of the busy downtown tourist district in Mystic, Connecticut. The job had the goal of restoring the aging 89-year-old Mystic River Bascule Bridge to its youthful glory, a project that achieved spectacular results during the off-season months in the close-knit community. ABC’s recognition honored Cianbro’s handling of the scope, complexity, phasing, tight scheduling, coordination, safety and productivity of the project, among other criteria. The company’s Mystic Bridge project won the State Excellence Award for Connecticut in 2015, which led to Cianbro’s eligibility for the national competition in 2016.
“We have won the Eagle Award in years past,” said Cianbro Project Superintendent Matt Hebert, “but it’s not something that happens every year. The project was a great achievement for the company and for the team that worked on it. It truly was a team effort, so receiving this award recognizes that. In my opinion, if we had not worked together so well as a team, at every level, every step of the way, from the planning and coordination to execution, we would not have successfully completed the project, and we wouldn’t be talking about a national award today. Just honoring that team effort by everyone involved, to me, is the biggest part of this.”
“Cianbro is known for taking on challenging projects and the Mystic Bridge Rehab was no exception,” said Regional Engineering Manager Kim Sieber. “Now, to be honored with a national award from ABC, it continues to recognize how our team faced the challenges and exceeded all expectations. The team, comprised of Cianbro, CONNDOT, and TranSystems, worked together to get ahead of the unknown issues associated with a very old movable bridge. However, the real superstars were the Cianbro crews. Our team members not only understood the work but they also understood the critical need to get it done in a unique setting that required planning around pedestrians ALL THE TIME. This award celebrates these team members and acknowledges their commitment to our client and to the community, and to representing Cianbro as a leader in the construction industry. Great job, Team!”
The project team also extends thanks to Proposal Coordinator Courtney Bierman and Assistant Business Development Manager Julie Carmody for their focused efforts in putting together the award applications.
