Back in July of 2012, Cianbro's Mid-Atlantic Region Team was awarded a project from NRG for an HRSG repower upgrade in Dover, Delaware. The project entailed the installation of a gas fired packaged boiler to allow an existing coal fired boiler to shut down, essentially swapping fuels for a new piece of equipment. The boiler provides steam/condensate and some power to next door neighbors Kraft Foods and Procter & Gamble. Also on site are two GE peaking units that provide power to the grid. The package boiler is a small piece of the overall project. The HRSG was partially installed to allow the original units to run until the final tie in and installation could be completed in the spring of 2013. There was also an ammonia tank and piping, feedwater pumps and piping, structural steel, ductwork, and other associated piping and equipment included in the project.
Now that the project has been completed, the $25 million upgrade has attracted attention from high places, including from Delaware's Governor Jack Markell and the state's entire congressional delegation during recent dedication ceremonies.
"NRG has reduced energy consumption and operating costs while at the same time significantly improving environmental performance," the governor said. "This in turn helps the economic competitiveness for Dover and all of Kent County, which is just tremendous, and it provides a very significant improvement in air quality for the people of the area."
