This week, Leica Geosystems, the developer of the High Definition Surveying (HDS) equipment used by Cianbro engineers, has recognized Cianbro's Site Geomatics HDS Program to be one of the top 30 HDS applications in the world. As a result, three of Cianbro's HDS engineers have been invited by Leica to present our company's HDS program at the annual HDS user conference in San Ramon, California at the end of October. "This is a great feat and opportunity for our program, and exposure for our corporation worldwide," says Seth Goucher, Chief Field Engineer at the Motiva Modules project at Cianbro's Eastern Manufacturing Facility in Brewer, Maine. "Several survey discipline magazines will be at the conference, as well as the top HDS users in the world. It is not uncommon to see several thousand people attend the conference. More than likely, our Cianbro team will be presenting to 300 or so top experts in this field."
Geoff Jacobs, a senior vice president at Leica Geosystems says, "You guys seem to be taking full advantage of the technology and definitely 'get it!'"
Goucher and his colleagues use the Leica HDS technology to measure the positions of module components to within an eighth of an inch. The laser scanning equipment allows engineers to make precise measurements without the need for climbing onto the massive modules themselves. The precision is necessary to allow the modules to slide into place quickly and efficiently once the Maine-made structures are delivered to the Motiva refinery expansion in Texas.
