Cianbro and Eastern Maine Community College have signed an agreement that will result in opportunities for team members to gain college credit for skills that were learned in the company's training programs, or gained on the job. The school will evaluate the skills of participants, and assign an academic value, up to 24 credit hours, for those trade skills.
Participants will have to complete additional core studies, in disciplines such as math and English, in order to graduate from EMCC with an Associates Degree in Applied Science. College President Joyce Hedlund says the value of the degree to both the student and to the overall economy is unmistakable.
Cianbro and EMCC established the program after long years of cooperation in the training of craftspeople. The leaders at Cianbro feel that the effort to provide college credit to team members can be extended throughout the company's operating regions.
