138 kV Line Rebuild

Careful logistics planning is critical to the success of this project and helped the team start the project off seamlessly rebuilding the line through the heart of a major city's business district and across a 6-lane highway.

Scope of Work

Cianbro rebuilt approximately 23 miles of 138 kV double circuit transmission line including installation of access/erosion controls/matting, drilled concrete foundations, and removal of the existing transmission line and lattice towers. The project was constructed in two segments of work.

Project Details

  • Segment 1 - 138 kV Line
    • Installed and removed access/construction matting/erosion controls
    • Installed 10.4 miles of double circuit 3-phase 795 ACSR conductor
    • Installed 10.4 miles of 1 - 48-fiber OPGW and 1 - Shieldwire
    • Constructed 60 new steel pole structures on drilled concrete foundations
    • Removed 10.4 miles of existing double circuit 138 kV transmission line and 45 existing lattice towers
  • Segment 2 - 138 kV Transmission Line
    • Installed and removed access/construction matting/erosion controls
    • Installed 12.5 miles of double circuit 3-phase 795 ACSR conductor
    • Installed 12.5 miles of 1 - 48-fiber OPGW and 1 - Shieldwire
    • Constructed 60 new steel pole structures on drilled concrete foundations
    • Removed 12.5 miles of existing double circuit 138 kV transmission line and 56 existing lattice towers
  • Managed the project Environmental Plan, including Stormwater Pollution and Prevention Plan (SWPPP)

Lean, Innovative, and Unique Project Solutions

Due to the critical nature of this transmission line, the outage schedule and construction sequence was extremely segmented utilizing numerous outages. An additional construction sequence variable included not being able to install particular access roads and work pads that were "not approved for early construction access" until mid-May 2017.
