Scope of Work

Cianbro rehabilitated 2.2 miles of the Capital Beltway (I-495) from US Route 29 west to, and including, the Georgia Avenue interchange.

Project Details

  • Widened and replaced the bridge deck over MD 97/Georgia Avenue
  • Poured 80,000 square feet of concrete for the bridge deck, 1,150 cubic yards of substructure concrete, and 376 cubic yards of foundation concrete
  • Drove 4,000 linear feet of piling
  • Placed 250,000 pounds of structural steel and 1,350 tons of reinforcing steel
  • Moved 50,000 tons of earth work
  • Layed 37,000 tons of pavement
  • Drilled 1,300 linear feet of 42-inch caissons
  • Demolished and replaced the deck on the bridges over Northern Parkway, Sligo Creek Parkway, and Brunett Avenue
  • Demolished and replaced the Northern Parkway Bridge
  • Cleaned and painted the bridges
  • Demolished and replaced 7,900 linear feet of median barrier
  • Reconstructed the median shoulders as well as milled, resurfaced and replaced lane markings eastbound and westbound, from US Route 29 to west of Georgia Avenue
  • Installed roadway signage, lighting, and landscaping

The Cianbro team successfully completed substructure widening of the Georgia Avenue Bridge, which required disruption of existing traffic patterns, in 39 calendar days—16 days ahead of schedule
