Deer Isle-Sedgwick bridge project delayed DEER ISLE, Maine -The Deer Isle-Sedgwick bridge will be open for wide loads and traffic this weekend, but weather has caused more delays in the completion of the project, officials said Thursday. "We needed ideal weather conditions to apply a waterproofing membrane to the concrete," said Robbin Lanpher, resident engineer for the Maine Department of Transportation. "But we got five foggy and overcast days." As a result the 48-hour full opening that was scheduled for June 21-22, when all crews and equipment are completely off the bridge, was moved to June 26-29. "It got moved around, but now there are more days so that is a little better for people traveling" Lanpher said. The bridge will go back to one lane on June 30. The $6 million construction project is now slated to be finished in the third week of July because of the weather delay, according to Lanpher. The bridge originally was set to be completed by July 3. The DOT also has gone over the proposed $6 million budget by about $500,000, said Lanpher. "On paper we are over but we actually planned for it in a contingency budget," he said. "You just can’t control the weather. You just plan for it and complete the work when you can." Maintenance crews from Cianbro Corp. and the DOT have been replacing the bridge’s old concrete deck panels with prefabricated concrete panels. The new panels are covered in a membrane and "wearing layers" that will help prevent corrosion of the concrete, said Lanpher. (Read more...) Train schedule on track to restart Saturday By: KATIE WARCHUT New London, CT -At 5:52 Saturday morning, Amtrak's first passenger train stops in New London and heads north - the first to cross the new-and-improved Thames River railroad bridge. The new vertical-lift span was dropped into place Thursday, replacing a span that opened like a drawbridge for nearly 100 years. The new span will rise parallel to the Gold Star Memorial Bridge like an elevator. Amtrak contractor Cianbro Corp. plans to work on bridge connections through today, aiming to bring the $83 million project to an end. (Read more...) Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, workers with Amtrak contractor Cianbro Corp. floated the new span into the river channel south of the two towers that will eventually lift it vertically, like an elevator, to make way for large marine vessels. They planned to work through the night, as the span was being raised slowly to about 30 feet above the railroad tracks with jacking towers and then lowered into its final position. Final touchdown was expected at 10 a.m. today. Trains are scheduled to go back into service Saturday, and the new bridge is set to start working July 1 with limited openings until July 10. Interstate Navigation Co., which runs Block Island Ferry, resumed its seasonal service Wednesday, as the ferry Anna C. was finally able to get out of its maintenance facility and through the bridge on Tuesday. The ferry Manitou will begin seasonal service between Newport, R.I., and Block Island on Saturday. (Read more...) |
