Scope of Work
This project consisted of repairing and strengthening the existing steel superstructure, scarifying the deck and replacing with latex modified concrete wearing surface; completely replaced 60 spans (3,600 ft.) of bridge superstructure, including steel beams, deck and parapet.

Project Details
  • Repaired deteriorated steel beams, columns and connections
  • Increased bride loading capacity by adding new members
  • Installed 45,000lf of new parapet
  • Repaired bent struts and caps
  • Removed deteriorated deck panels with a crane and lowered them to a barge below
  • Replaced 60 spans with new precast spans

Unique Challenge

The replacement of the 60 spans on the Virginia side of the bridge required precasting 60 segments weighing 125 tons each. These were transported across the Potomac River and set in place using a large A-frame derrick mounted on a barge. This was done during an eight hour bridge closure each Saturday night. The old segments were towed to shore, and demolished.
