Cianbro mobilized this project rapidly by bringing in 190 truck loads of barge sections and crane equipment for five barge mounted cranes fromMay 11th – June 6th
Scope of Work
Cianbro constructed a new 3,400 ft bridge with a concrete deck placed over steel plate girders. Each span is 156 ft long and the roadway approaches include two, 330 ft long causeway approaches.
- Used 10 ft, 4 inch diameter casings acting as mini-cofferdams weighing up to 106,000 lbs each for the construction of twenty-two concrete piers and two abutments
- Rock socketed the piers into the bedrock for anchoring
- Installed pre-tied rebar cages weighing up to 27 tons and placed tremie concrete
- Constructed pier stems and hammer head pier caps using an EFCO form system
- Constructed abutments utilizing a sheet-pile coffer system
- Demolished the existing bascule span bridge built in 1938 and a 800 ft of the causeway
Lean, Innovative, and Unique Project Solutions
Cianbro constructed this project 100% from the water by utilizing barge mounted cranes. This project had strict environmental constraints from September to May due to a protected turtle environment. In addition to working from barges and the strict environmental constraints, Cianbro constructed the western approach to the bridge near an Indian burial ground for the St. Francis/Sokoki Band of Abenaki Indians and worked with archeologists and state representatives to complete the work around the burial site in a manner that allowed for recovery of sacred items.
