Scope of Work

Cianbro constructed the north and south piers for the bascule substructure of the Casco Bay Bridge.

Project Details

  • Provided temporary fenders and lighting
  • Installed two 60 feet x 115 feet cofferdams and excavated to glacial till
  • Drove 462 steel H-piles to support the foundations
  • Placed a 7,000 cubic yards continuous seal concrete pour to facilitate foundation construction at the South Pier
  • Placed two, 3,500 cubic yards concrete pours at the North Pier
  • Placed 16,000 cubic yards of structural shaft concrete
  • Removed cofferdams
  • Installed permanent fender system
  • Installed cathodic protection

Lean, Innovative, and Unique Project Solutions

In order to handle the required high rate of the concrete placement, Cianbro set up its own concrete batch plant, with a conveyor belt from the batch plant to the deep water foundations. Cianbro also established communication procedures with the maritime community to meet their needs and enable the work to be completed on schedule
