It was another successful competition for Cianbro and Starcon as team members matched skills against some of the best up-and-coming craftspeople in the nation.
Four competitors from Cianbro were among the 176 competitors who took part in the 2017 ABC National Craft Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Two members of the team brought home medals.
Brandyn Kendall, Ryan Tupper, Colby Higgins and Logan Bui competed in the pipe welding, structural welding, millwrighting and pipefitting competitions respectively. Brandyn took home a gold medal in pipe welding, and Colby won a silver medal in the millwright competition.
“Our guys did a great job,” said Cianbro T&D Training Manager Jon Sacks. “All four of them represented the company professionally, in their demeanor, in the way they interacted with people, the way they interacted with other competitors, and the way they went about their work. Two of them came home with wins. Our other two competitors didn’t place, but did very well in very competitive contests. They prepared hard and they all were very competitive.
Meanwhile, Cianbro sponsored a demonstration with partners from Gaylor Electric out of Indianapolis, Indiana for a new Lineworker Competition, a contest that is likely to become part of the National Craft Championships next year.
“The National Craft Championship committee voted to try a demonstration this year, generate some interest this year…and have contestants for next year,” said Jon Sacks. “This competition focuses on apprentice-type skills for lineworkers. And for our company, the apprenticeship program is very key to our strategic plan. Gaylor Electric is co-founding the competition. This contest puts our lineworker apprentices out into the forefront. It’s very public. It also gives our apprentices something to strive for, and gives us an ability to improve our program by striving to put a contestant out there who will compete with the best in the country.”
Hats off to Cianbro’s Mike Raven, Bruce Chesley and Jon Sacks for their work on behalf of the National Craft Championships and for preparing this year’s award-winning Cianbro team.
With the hard work and commitment to training from Starcon’s instructors and team members, Starcon was able to send four competitors to compete in the 2017 National Craft Championships. Joining 172 other competitors from across the nation were Starcon’s Eric Fields from Catlettsburg, Kentucky – competing in Pipefitting; Jose Chavez from FHR Channahon, Illinois – taking part in the Mechanical Insulation competition; Jacob Ritchie from Ingredion, Bedford Park, Illinois – competing in Pipe Welding; and Tommy Lykins from Catlettsburg, Kentucky – going up against the competition in Structural Steel Welding.
Starcon is very pleased to announce that Jose Chavez won the Gold Medal in Mechanical Insulation, and Tommy Lykins won the Bronze Medal in Structural Steel Welding. Congratulations for an outstanding job!
