International Risk Management Institute (IRMI) Honors Cianbro for “Beyond Zero”

The Gary E. Bird Horizon Award was presented at the 34th IRMI Construction Risk Conference to the Cianbro Corporation team of Mike Bennett, Vice President of HSE & HR, and Scott Knowlen, Corporate Health, Safety, Security, & Environmental Manager. This award recognized the team for its innovative loss control program.

The Cianbro team created and implemented the award-winning Journey Beyond Zero which developed and implemented a loss control program that focused on the caring aspect of leadership. This initiative has had significant impact on the organization’s workers compensation costs since it was introduced.

“There is nothing that we do that is more important than taking care of our team members,” Scott said.  “The Journey Beyond Zero program helps our team members to understand why they work safely and connects the heart and the mind in their daily activities. Going home in the same condition in which they came to work is not good enough. We want our team to go home healthy and more educated, and to take what they learn about safety and wellness to educate their families, friends, and other organizations that they see when away from the jobsite.  If we personally work safely, have each other’s back, speak up when we see risks, and thank those who speak up for us, then we will truly achieve an organization where nobody gets hurt.”

Mike added, “The Cianbro team should be proud of their efforts.  Safety is a team effort and having business partners like Travelers on our team, who really are an extension of the Cianbro Family, provides us great comfort knowing they are out there and have our backs. Keep up the great work and stay focused on working safe!”

The Gary E. Bird Horizon Award, sponsored by Travelers, is presented annually by IRMI to recognize a demonstrated commitment to improving construction risk management through the implementation of innovative, cost-effective, and efficient risk management techniques.

Rick Keegan is President of Travelers Construction.  He said the Beyond Zero program is "very applicable to the industry and the continued challenges associated with worker safety. Considering the current challenges associated with finding skilled labor, a fully integrated safety culture that focuses on awareness and training -- and personalizing safety at the individual level -- will be a must for contractors as they onboard the next generation of construction workers."

The award is named in honor of Gary E. Bird, a nationally known risk management expert lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Gary expanded the risk management horizon as he searched for new and innovative ways to approach the risks associated with large construction projects.

International Risk Management Institute, Inc. was founded in 1978 to provide important risk and insurance information to business, legal, risk management, and insurance professionals. In the years since it was founded, IRMI has published the most comprehensive library (45,000+ pages) of practical manuals, books, and newsletters available. IRMI also sponsors seminars and conferences, and the annual IRMI Construction Risk Conference is the premier national symposium devoted exclusively to the management of construction risks.
