Cianbro Fabrication and Coating Corporation's Baltimore Team Excels at High-Profile Bridge Project in Massachusetts

Cianbro Fabrication and Coating Corporation's Baltimore team is getting accolades for some top-notch work on an aesthetically pleasing pedestrian bridge that is the centerpiece of a revitalization project in the communities of Revere and Malden, Massachusetts. The Baltimore crew was responsible for fabricating all of the steel components for the intricate Markey Memorial Pedestrian Bridge, which was designed to resemble Boston's landmark cable-stayed Zakim Bridge. The Markey Bridge connects the local Mass Transit station with historic Revere Beach, America's first public beach which was established in 1896.

One of the first milestones in the project was the fabrication of twelve 90 foot plate girders that had to be delivered within a six week span. With a herculean effort, the team accomplished that task and then moved ahead with fabricating the rest of the steel which had the added challenge of being part of an unconventional bridge that incorporated odd angles for aesthetic purposes.

"On this bridge, nothing was square," said Project Manager Matt Zilliox. "This had to be a very precise, aesthetically oriented fabrication. The team members in Baltimore did some thinking ahead of time, and then they nailed it right on. The bridge crews started erecting in late September, the bulk of the construction was completed by mid-October, and the opening took place on November 26th. Our Fab Team completed the job on time and on budget. Thousands of motorists will see this bridge every day, and Cianbro received lots of compliments as the bridge went up. With this project, Cianbro Fab has demonstrated how the team can accomplish an architecturally and aesthetically pleasing pedestrian bridge. It's one more highlight to add to Cianbro's resume."
