Niantic Update: A Successful Float-in

It was a crucial milestone of the Niantic Railroad Bridge Replacement Project:  the float-in and bolt-up of the 400 ton bascule section for the new bridge which spans the Niantic River between Waterford and East Lyme, Connecticut. After months of detailed planning, the float-in got underway on the morning of March 26, 2012.  By evening, the span was precisely where it needed to be, and the Cianbro/Middlesex night crew had begun to make the connections at the splice on the heel girders, in preparation for opening the bridge by the weekend. Amtrak's Peter Finch, Middlesex's Jeff Roig, and Cianbro's Kris Ballard describe the day's events.
