The Niantic River Bridge Replacement Project: Re-birth of a Century-old Span

In the spring of 2010, Cianbro/Middlesex team members began a three year project to replace a century-old moveable railway bridge between Niantic and Waterford, Connecticut. The work for Amtrak is complicated by the fact that the job site is a tight squeeze between Long Island Sound to the south, and a busy rail corridor to the north including commuter and freight traffic, as well as high voltage catenary lines. After a successful summer of progress, Cianbro Safety Superintendent Kris Ballard offers a tour of the site.
