Cianbro awarded Two Excellence in Construction Awards

The Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) has recognized the best accomplishments in the Mid-Atlantic region's construction industry at an awards program & banquet in Annapolis, Maryland. Cianbro corporation was presented with two 2009 Excellence in Construction Awards. Congratulations to Cianbro MAR's winners!  The first is the Magellan Trestle & Dolphins project at the Wilmington, Delaware marine terminal.  The second is the removal and reinstallation of high pressure Feedwater Heater number 26 at the Brandon Shores power plant in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Magellan project consisted of civil (marine) and mechanical construction of fuel unloading lines. The contracts included constructing a 1,000 foot pile-supported pipe trestle necessary to cross tidal mudflats from shoreline to the unloading dock, a pile-supported concrete capped mooring dolphin for vessel berthing, additional dolphin repairs, and installation of all associated piping and mechanical systems to convey unloaded fuels from tanker vessels.

The civil work included landside clearing and grubbing, followed by driving 79 pipe pile for trestle bents, and 18 pipe pile for the dolphins. The trestle pile were 16 inch diameter, driven an average of 91 feet, while the dolphin pile were 18 inch diameter, driven an average of 154 feet. Cianbro’s scope of work also included fabrication and installation of all of the trestle and dolphin steel.

Among the team members who took part in this award-winning job are Project Manager Gary Gorman, Senior Project Superintendent Wade Simons, Project Engineers Robert Lichty and Joshua Lee, Project Manager Gary Smith, Safety Specialist Mike Lovejoy, Industrial Project Manager Brian Walsh, Project Mechanical Superintendent Steve McCallister, Pipe Foreman Thomas Cox, and General Foreman Dave Dalton.

The removal and reinstallation of high pressure Feedwater Heater number 26 project consisted of replacing the #26 high pressure feedwater heater at the Brandon Shores power plant unit #2, which is a 680 MW, coal-fired station. Both old and new feedwater heaters were closed, u-tube types, approximately six feet in diameter and 50 feet long.  The old unit weighed 123,000 pounds and the new one slightly more at 146,000 pounds. The feedwater heater was located 200 feet within the structure, approximately 80 feet above grade. This work took place during a six week outage, ending in December of 2008.

The start and end dates for the outage were rigid.  Though the owner performed many other projects during this outage, the feedwater heater replacement comprised most of the critical path. Consequently, it received significant visibility. Cianbro maintained a planned, 7-day a week work schedule, with certain portions of the project requiring 12-hour days. The project was completed safely, successfully, and three days early. Among the team members who took part in this award-winning job are Senior Project Manager Brian Walsh, Project Manager Mike Dearmott, Project Superintendent Tom Perrier, Project Engineer Chow Hwang, and Field Engineer Jae Park.
