Cianbro Utilizes 3D Modeling at the Destiny Project

With the vast installations of duct, heating/cooling piping, electrical conduits, plumbing systems and sprinkler piping, planners at the Destiny project have used a more sophisticated process to perform the work. The conventional industry practice is to use two-dimensional drawings, where "overlay drawings" are compared against the plans of each trade discipline, starting with large duct, and following with other mechanical and electrical systems. At Destiny, the project team uses an innovative 3D modeling process.  With 3D modeling and the use of Building Information Modeling, or "BIM", the process is driven by technology. Each trade inputs data from their respective piping system, and the software program then reviews each trade for clash on steel, and then for clash with each other trade. The process is more efficient, and clashes are seen visually. This allows for corrections to be made in the model before the system is ever installed. The process reduces potential change orders and rework associated with the conventional coordination process. Additional benefits include the ability to fabricate duct, large bore heat piping and sprinkler piping directly from the modeled information. This allows the trade contractor to ship fabricated material to site, thereby going from truck to ceiling and minimizing re-handling.  The process also allows for a higher level of quality control.

Cianbro MEP Coordinator Jim Fitzgerald and Project Manager Bruce Brown worked with project architect Dalpos to ensure the process went smoothly. The photos show how closely the model resembles reality at Destiny.  Cianbro is excited to participate in such a cutting-edge process!
