Cianbro Earns Four National ABC Awards for Construction Excellence and Safety Achievements

Mar 12 2015

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has given national recognition to Cianbro for excellence in the construction of three milestone projects, and followed up by honoring the company for achievements in safety in 2014.

Cianbro's National Safety Excellence Award is one of only eleven national safety commendations that were given at ABC's 25th annual Excellence in Construction Awards on March 5th at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center in Florida. One of the other eleven national safety honorees is Cianbro's subsidiary, Starcon.

Cianbro earned National Excellence in Construction Awards in the Industrial category for the ReEnergy Black River Retrofit Project in Fort Drum, New York; in the Mega-Projects ($100-199 million) category for the Cianbro/Middlesex Joint Venture construction of the Niantic River Bascule Railroad Bridge Replacement Project in Waterford, Connecticut; and in the Mega-Projects (over $200 million) category for the Cianbro/Middlesex Joint Venture construction of the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project in Somerset, Massachusetts.

“Each year we are honored to recognize the very best construction projects the industry has to offer and this year’s winners’ commitment to quality and safety throughout the planning, execution and delivery of each of these projects is truly remarkable,” said 2015 ABC National Chair Pamela Volm. “These projects, the contractors who carried them out and their employees are a perfect embodiment of ABC’s value proposition: to help members develop people, win work and deliver that work safely, ethically, profitably and for the betterment of the communities in which ABC and its members work.”

Cianbro's achievements at the ReEnergy project included meeting the owner’s hard deadline for the conversion of an idle coal-fired power plant into a regionally harvested biomass fuel facility through teamwork and increased craft personnel.

The Niantic Bridge project benefitted from the ability of the Cianbro/Middlesex JV to handle issues ranging from the management of active marine traffic to accommodating unforeseen soil conditions. Cianbro/Middlesex coordinated seamlessly with Amtrak and more than 35 subcontractors to replace a 106-year-old bascule bridge with zero lost-time injuries in three years.

The Brightman Street Bridge project was recognized by ABC for Cianbro/Middlesex's five-year effort to build a new 60-foot-high bascule bridge requiring on-barge crane work, river dredging, major land excavation and the installation of a high-tech operating system—all while managing marine traffic and a daily crew of 150 people.

The 2014 National Safety Excellence Award winners were selected from ABC member firms that achieved Diamond, Platinum and Gold status in ABC's Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) and were judged on self-evaluation scores, lost workday case rates, total recordable rates, use of leading indicators, innovation in processes and training and interviews conducted by members of ABC’s National Environment, Health & Safety Committee.

“What a fantastic week for Cianbro and Starcon,” said Cianbro's Vice President of HR, Health, Safety & Environmental Mike Bennett.  “ABC recognized us with two National Safety Excellence Awards, five Medals in the National Craft Competitions, two Individual Craft Safety Medals, three Excellence in Construction awards, Jon Sacks winning the National Instructor of the Year, and a wonderful send-off tribute to Ed LePage who managed his final Millwright Competition for ABC. The accolades and recognition certainly make you proud. But more importantly, the sense of pride I have being associated with this company is because of the wonderful team members who make us such a great company.
Congratulations to all the competitors, Jon and Eddie for a job well done. Your commitment to excellence and the dedication to both your craft and our companies are forever documented in the prestigious recognition you all received in Fort Lauderdale.”

The Excellence in Construction awards program honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer and projects are judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year's panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the American Institute of Architects, and the National Association of Women in Construction, and representatives from higher education, among others.
