Cianbro's operations with joint venture partner, the Middlesex Companies, have been a bright spot in the company's portfolio for 2008 and 2009. Work is progressing smoothly, with the team celebrating 400,000 hours without a lost time injury while staying on schedule for a 2012 completion. The result of these efforts is a visually striking bridge that will serve an important role in the Fall River/Somerset area of southern Massachusetts. Project Manager Kaven Philbrook talks about this shining success story.

The second voyage to deliver Cianbro modules to the Motiva refinery expansion project in Texas is underway. Friday morning, crews worked beneath a steady drizzle at the Eastern Manufacturing Facility bulkhead in Brewer, Maine, to prepare the four modules for the 2,300 mile barge journey. Crew members aboard the ocean going tug, Emma Foss, secured lines to the barge and slid out into the middle of the Penobscot River practically "on the dot" at 11:30 a.m. as scheduled.

In May, a large group of M.I.T. alumni traveled to the site of the picturesque Penobscot Narrows Bridge in Maine to hear Cianbro Project Manager Kaven Philbrook talk about the engineering magic that went into the span's design. Philbrook headed up the Joint Venture that built the bridge between 2003 and 2006. At the event sponsored by the M.I.T. Club of Maine, Philbrook joined fellow Project Manager Tom Doe of the Maine D.O.T. to describe the creation of the landmark bridge.

The organization is known as Jobs For Maine's Graduates, Inc., or JMG, and the program helps middle school and high school students to stay on the path toward a worthwhile education. Cianbro, which has supported the organization for years, has now added extra financial clout to JMG's mission. For every JMG graduate who hires on at Cianbro and stays with the company for six months to a year, Cianbro will donate funding to JMG.

Since April, Cianbro team members have been laying the groundwork for renovating the ferry terminals in Lincolnville and Islesboro, Maine, scheduled to take place during a month-long shutdown in early fall. The project is critical to islanders who rely on the ferry service for everything from emergency medical care to trips to the grocery store.

The steel erection crew has set the final girder for the W-S ramp Connector. Weighing in at over 55,000 pounds, the 87 foot girder completes the portion of the W-S Ramp that connects to the East Approach. Next up, the steel erection crew will begin preparation for the erection of the W-S ramp from the South abutment to Pier 5.

The Cianbro team members who create the work package instructions for building Motiva's refinery modules are entering their work in a special competition. The work package engineers at Brewer's Eastern Manufacturing Facility use 3-D software to visualize the construction of the modules. That software is called Bentley's ConstructSim. Now Bentley has invited Cianbro's team to submit their work for Bentley's Be Inspired Awards

The ocean going tug Emma Foss and her barge Columbia Boston are back in Maine waters after delivering the first Cianbro modules for the Motiva refinery expansion project in Texas. The vessels arrived in Searsport on Tuesday afternoon, May 5th, with plans to head up the Penobscot River to Brewer beginning at sunrise on Wednesday, arriving in Brewer at 8:45 a.m.

The first four of Cianbro's Maine-made refinery expansion modules are in the process of being installed at the Motiva refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. Cianbro's Project Manager Scott Clements says he has confirmation of one module already locked into place on the refinery pad.

Cianbro's Maine-made refinery expansion modules have created quite a spectacle as they've rolled down the main thoroughfare in the coastal Texan town of Port Arthur. The massive modules were unloaded from the barge, Columbia Boston, in about half the time that had been set aside. As of Thursday, April 23rd, one module was already fastened down on the pad at the Motiva refinery.
