Progress continues at the Fox Islands Wind project on Vinalhaven Island in Maine, where Cianbro crews are erecting three 1.5 megawatt General Electric wind turbines to power the communities on Vinalhaven and nearby North Haven Island. To date, one turbine has been installed up to the mid-section of its tower, another turbine is complete except for its rotor, and a third turbine is fully assembled. In order to accomplish the steady progress, team members have had to plan around the capricious sea breeze that will eventually power the turbines. Just last night, Cianbro crews showed up at the jobsite at 2:30 a.m. with the hope of flying a nacelle onto the second tower. Project Manager Chad Allen and Superintendent Eric Brown had monitored forecasts for the immediate vicinity of the jobsite, and learned there would be a lull in the wind between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. The team used the window successfully, and finished the nacelle installation by dawn. Today, team members are working on the ground to complete

Cianbro's Tambrands Team Sets a Safety Record

No Cianbro jobsite had accomplished the milestone… until now. Team members at Procter and Gamble's Tambrands manufacturing facility in Auburn, Maine have gone two consecutive years without a single recordable incident. Cianbro and P&G celebrated recently with a luncheon for team members, and talk of a closer partnership between the two companies in the future.

It's been a busy summer at Cianbro's Pennington Avenue Bridge Project in Baltimore, Maryland near the Mid-Atlantic Regional office. The Cianbro crew, led by Project Manager Tesfa Berhane, has been upgrading infrastructure at the bridge, including electrical systems, machinery, and open gearing. Inspections revealed a cracked trunnion bearing earlier in the project, which led team members to devise a way to lift two million pounds of bridge to extract the flawed component and replace it. The upgrade is proceeding favorably, despite the big, heavy nature of the job, and the cramped quarters in which the team maneuvers. The crew is on schedule to open the southern span to traffic in November.

It has been an exciting week for Cianbro team members, General Electric technicians, officials of Fox Islands Wind, and the general public on Vinalhaven Island off the coast of Maine. Crews are erecting the first tower components in a process that will eventually bring three 263 foot tall GE wind turbines online to supply the electricity needs of Vinalhaven and North Haven. The installation includes some impressive crane work by Cianbro's operators, and close coordination of support teams on the ground. The latest construction operations mean that actual power generation from the turbines is on schedule for a November start up.

With annual revenues in the tens of millions of dollars, Cianbro's versatile Industrial Group in the Mid-Atlantic Region is a corporate powerhouse that helps to keep the power on at generators throughout the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. But that's not all that the group is capable of doing. Their team members can be found maintaining chemical plants, refurbishing large outdoor storage tanks, and even putting up drywall if necessary. Senior Project Manager Brian Walsh talks about the team's latest successes.
