Cianbro team members in the Mid-Atlantic Region have been doing top-notch work on the restoration of the historic Humpback Bridge, located in the shadow of the Pentagon. The job has required detailed attention to the historic aspects of the bridge, while making sure that the busy traffic in the area continues to flow smoothly. The team's efforts are featured in the current edition of Aspire: The Concrete Bridge Magazine, including comments from Cianbro's Senior Project Engineer Mike Manoski.

Poland Spring’s newest bottling facility, built in 2008 in Kingfield, Maine, has officially received the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, making it the first manufacturing facility in Maine to receive LEED Gold status. LEED is an internationally recognized certification system that measures how well a building performs across various sustainability metrics, including energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, and stewardship of resources.

Many team members wondered what the digital signs were all about. The 2009 Go-To List of top contractors has just been released by Roads & Bridges Magazine. The list is the result of a survey conducted by the magazine among more than 10,000 government officials from various levels of government across the United States. The key question for the officials was, "Which contractor do you prefer to work with" in five categories of construction. The categories are: Transportation Projects, Road & Highway Projects, Bridge Projects, Mass Transit Projects, and Airport Projects. Cianbro Corporation was ranked Number Two out of 25 firms named in the survey under the Bridge Project category, second only to Austin Industries, a 130 year old bridge contractor based in Texas.

Organizers had the goal of making the 10th Annual Maine ABC Craft Championships the biggest and best ever. And the statistics show that the goal was achieved. This year, the event attracted the most contractor participation, the most students, and the most policy-makers in the history of the Championships. The 2009 Edition also saw the introduction of a new annual award, named after two well-known members of Cianbro's family, and presented this year to a beloved Cianbro teacher who passed away in 2009.

Cianbro has just completed an emergency repair on the Memorial Bridge which connects Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine. Due to the hard work by the committed crew, Cianbro completed the quality repair a week ahead of schedule and with zero safety incidents. Cianbro was awarded this contract to install steel support gusset plates at a weakened location on the bridge. The work consisted of setting up traffic controls for the pedestrian traffic, hanging suspended scaffolding under the bridge, containing and de-leading the work area, coating the steel, chipping and busting rivets, installing custom bolts in the rivet holes, designing and building templates, fabricating and installing cheese plates and the final gusset plates, and lastly, applying a three coat paint system to the steel repair. Cianbro's onsite team consisted of Iron Worker's Dave Bond, Scott Bumps, Mike McVane and Welder Louis Martin, all led by General Foreman Bill Moulton and Superintendent Pat Sughrue.

Cianbro CEO Peter Vigue was among the national, state, and local dignitaries who contributed glowing statements at this week's dedication of the brand new Fox Islands Wind turbines on Vinalhaven Island off the Maine coast. Maine Governor John Baldacci, U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree, Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree, and Harvard Business Professor and FIW visionary George Baker were among the speakers who joined Vigue at the podium beneath Turbine #2. The project is being hailed up and down the eastern seaboard as a model for energy independence, stabilized power supplies and affordable utility prices, while also contributing to a cleaner environment.
