Scope of Work
Cianbro is rehabilitating the Pennington Avenue Bridge over Curtis Bay, on the Patapsco River. The project includes replacement of the main operating machinery, gearing, electrical equipment, lighting as well as roadway and grating repairs.
Project Details
Cianbro is:
- Replacing the electric motor control center, control cabinets, control desk, automatic transfer switch, panel boards, and transformers
- Concurrently maintaining and replacing the existing bridge control system
- Replacing the existing lighting, conduit and wire system
- Furnishing and installing the center lock, tail lock and leaf motors
- Completing the rehabilitation of open gearing
- Constructing sidewalk replacement on the bascule span along with roadway grating repairs, and steel/concrete repairs
- Providing potable water supply, distribution system, new sanitary line, and sewage holding tank for the control house
- Providing traffic maintenance throughout the project
Unique Challenge
Early in the project, Cianbro completed the installation of seven submarine cables, each extending approximately 580 ft long. This installation was performed within a one week time frame, in temperatures below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Cianbro is facing a unique challenge with the replacement of the South West span Trunnion bearing. Replacement of one of the eight existing Trunnion bearings requires that the Cianbro team jacks the entire south west span section of the bridge. The two-ton bearing will be transferred by a barge-mounted crane into tight quarters under the bridge. This portion of the project is very environmentally and time sensitive, and has attracted national and international interest.
