Scope of Work
Cianbro is constructing a pier, a research lab and mechanical building to support oyster cultivation research for the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science Horn Point Laboratory on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Project Details
Cianbro is:
- Constructing a 70 ft wide x 300 ft long pier supported by concrete piles and steel pipe piles
- Framing the pier with cast-in-place concrete caps
- Installing one foot thick solid pre-cast slabs above the concrete caps, which are topped off with a one foot thick cast-in-place slab
- Constructing a laboratory building on the pier
- Constructing a mechanical building with equipment on the pier
- Installing electrical conduits embedded in the top slab
- Removing pumps and replacing with two 2,600 GPM pumps at the existing pump house
- Installing CPVC piping for ambient sea water, heated sea water, air bubblers, and potable water
- Installing an underground potable water line, forced sewage main and fiber optic communication line
Unique Challenge
The Oyster Cultivation facility project provides unique challenges including noise and work restrictions from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday, estimated tip elevation versus minimum tip elevation for pile driving, locating and protecting existing buried utilities, and maintaining existing services and traffic during construction.
