Scope of Work
Cianbro is constructing a five-mile, 138 kV transmission line extension from Landover, Maryland to Amtrak’s Ivy City Yard in Washington, DC. The project also includes the construction, testing and commissioning of a new 138 kV – 12 kV, single-phase substation at the Ivy City Yard.
Project Details
Transmission Line construction includes:
- Installing 66 steel transmission line structures with drilled pier foundations
- Removal and replacement of existing transmission line conductor and static wire
- Framing and installation of associated line conductors, static wire, and insulators
- Removing and disposing of existing U2 feeder system
Substation construction includes:
- Installing138 kV motor operated disconnect switches
- Installing traction power transformers
- Installing 12 kV disconnect switches, circuit breakers cabling, and feeders
- Construction of substation control building with relay control panels
- Installing auxiliary power, lighting, grounding, P&C cable, terminations and SCADA
- Performing civil work consisting of demolition, grading, utilities, fencing and drainage systems and access road construction
Unique Challenge
The project is uniquely challenging due to working adjacent to a live railroad. The adjacent track is part of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor; a heavily used route with trains traveling in both directions at speeds reaching 125 mph
